Mapandan was formerly known as barrio of Mangaldan. It became a municipality in the year 1909 under the initiative of a Parish Priest of Mangaldan, Rev. Father Benigno Jimenez.

Way back, the town was known for a native palm “pandan” which was used for cooking because of its aroma. Sooner, the town was called Mapandan which means plenty of pandan. These leaves were also stripped and woven into mats.
